Studies show that the retina contains two carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, with the greatest concentration at the center. Within the central macula, zeaxanthin is the dominant component, up to 75% of the total, whereas in the peripheral retina, lutein predominates, usually being 67% or greater.
Lutein and zeaxanthin have identical chemical formulas and are isomers, but they are not stereoisomers. The main difference between them is in the location of a double bond in one of the end rings. This difference gives lutein three chiral centers whereas zeaxanthin has two.
Evidence points to a correlation between macular pigment density and a reduction in the risk for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Eating lutein- and zeaxanthin-rich foods or taking supplements of these carotenoids can restore macular pigment density and help protect against AMD(age-related macular degeneration).
